With 16 new train sets purchased through STA and put into service in 2008 and 2013, the province of South Tyrol has taken the modernisation of the rolling stock for local rail transport into its own hands. We had already purchased 12 smaller diesel train sets for the recommissioning of the Vinschger Bahn in 2005. The new trains, all in the familiar South Tyrolean design, mark a new era in regional rail transport and have brought about a new mobility behaviour among the population: travelling by train is "in" again.
On 6 May 2019, Canadian rolling stock manufacturer Bombardier secured the contract to supply new trains. First and foremost, the new trains are to make direct through services from Innsbruck to Mals possible. The hourly direct trains Franzensfeste-Innichen-Lienz are also to be continued, and with the completion of the Riggertalschleife the axis Mals-Bolzano-Innichen-Lienz is to be connected through.
